100 Things

1. I was born at home, 2 weeks early.
2. Because of this I was covered in hair and looked like a monkey.
3. I also had an extra umbilical cord and a caul, which is a thin membrane over your face. It used to be considered very lucky and means various things: I am destined for greatness; I will never drown; I will be able to see into the future; I could grow up to be a vampire.
4. My earliest memory is of falling off a wall in the back garden and splitting my head open. I was 3.
5. When I was little I hated wearing dresses. My Mum made me wear them on special occasions.
6. I used to hide them down the back of the radiator and wear shorts instead.
7. I am unbelievably short sighted. I started wearing glasses aged 10.
8. I’m very clumsy but tests have shown I have no disorders, just pure tunnel vision.
9. Amazingly I have never broken a major bone, only fingers.
10. I’m a pessimist, but don’t hold it against me, I swear I like to find humour in most things.
11. The only music I will dance to is cheesy pop. Badly.
12. I’m a total geek.
13. I didn’t get the girly ‘I love shoes and handbags’ gene, so I can’t relate.
14. I own three pairs of shoes.
15. I love to laugh.
16. Buffy is, and maybe always will be, my hero. Oh ok, maybe I won’t go that far, but it’s my favourite show in a world of brilliant (and sometimes beyond mediocre) shows.
17. I’m a TV addict and not ashamed to admit it.
18. I’ve taken up knitting. I have yet to finish a scarf.
19. I seriously could not survive without tea. It is my comfort food.
20. I don’t like vegetables, except cauliflower.
21. Most of my favourite foods are white. It’s a coincidence I swear.
22. I had my ears pierced at 3. My mum said I kicked up such a fuss it was easier to let me. I have no idea why I wanted it done so badly. I don’t wear earrings now.
23. I think diamonds are tacky.
24. I really hate the idea that the bigger the diamond engagement ring the more the man loves you.
25. My hometown is called Wombwell. It’s in South Yorkshire. It has few redeeming features.
26. I went to Lancaster University and did American Studies. (Yeah, I know, useful).
27. My second year was spent at the University of Maryland.
28. It was a pretty big disappointment.
29. I sometimes wish it was feasible for me to have a baby now. I do not want to be an old mum.
30. I don’t know if I’ll ever get married.
31. If I do, it has to be for life.
32. I hope one day I have a daughter.
33. I hope she is like me, but better at everything.
34. I sometimes wish I was famous.
35. I daydream my Oscar acceptance speech. And giving interviews to magazines.
36. I have no talent with which to become famous. That’s probably for the best.
37. I don’t drink.
38. I’ve never been drunk or hungover.
39. I don’t like to go out to bars or clubs because I’m never comfortable there.
40. I generally dislike living in London.
41. I think most of the people here are rude, aggressive and have no manners.
42. I worry that if I live here long enough I’ll become one of them.
43. I think about packing it all in to live by the sea or in the countryside.
44. My first kiss was aged 12.
45. It was on the back of a bus on a school trip to France.
46. It was pretty gross.
47. I have waking dreams where I’ll think there is a bug in my bed or I am being attacked by cats, and I act things out. It’s called Hypnagogia.
48. I hate cats.
49. I am allergic, they make me swell up, and I think they are in league with the devil.
50. I had a pet budgie once.
51. It died because I didn’t feed it properly. I still feel guilty.
52. I want to write one of the greatest novels ever written.

54. I hate all nuts. The smell, the taste…ugh, makes me sick.
55. I love sleeping in.
56. Snuggling in bed watching a good film, drinking tea and eating jaffa cakes is a little piece of heaven.

58. I sometimes think I am my own worst enemy.
59. I really hate perfume. I think it should be outlawed.

61. I wonder if I’ll ever know what it is I want to do with my life.
62. I suffer from eczema. It’s usually mild but it can be bad at times.
63. I think life would be better if we lived inside a musical.
64. I only ever sing when no one’s around.
65. I’m very pale, to the point of being see through. I reflect the sun.
66. My hair started going white when I was 19.
67. I have to dye it every couple of months.
68. I resent that.
69. I try to tell myself that at least I’m not bald.
70. I don’t really know what I believe when it comes to God.
71. Other than people should leave each other’s beliefs alone.
72. And not be judgmental.
73. I have to remind myself of 72 sometimes.
74. I hate driving. I passed my test on the third go.
75. I got an E for History A Level, and I’m still ashamed.
76. I am not very good with boys. They’re kinda scary.
77. But I had one to call mine once.
78. He’s still my best friend.
79. I give blood regularly, and I think if you can, you should. It’s the closest to saving a life I’ll ever get.
80. I don’t skip breakfast.
81. On my 3rd day of high school I fainted in the school cafeteria. In front of practically my whole year.
82. I have to pluck my eyebrows everyday. It’s that damn monkey gene.
83. I am no good with makeup.
84. I read a lot.
85. I don’t really understand people who don’t like to read. Not because I think they are stupid, or I am better than them, but because I love it so much, I wish everyone did.
86. I don’t always say what I think, just in case someone disagrees with me.
87. I think my teenage self would be very disappointed in me.
88. People would say I am picky when it comes to food.
89. I would say I know what I like.
90. I would like to own a chocolate Labrador one day and name him Blue.
91. I know a lot of words to a lot of songs. They just stick.
92. I can’t do maths. I panic around numbers. They didn’t stick.
93. Going shopping usually makes me feel bad about myself.
94. I hate it when people jump the queue. Their time is no more important than anyone else’s.
95. I get migraines. I wouldn’t wish them on my worst enemy.
96. I am not a morning person. I’d rather not see or speak to anyone until after breakfast.
97. I don’t make my tea the ‘right’ way. The milk goes in first. I like it really milky.
98. My hair goes poofy with a hint of moisture. Humidity is my enemy.
99. The world often seems like a very strange, scary place.

Responses

I passed my driving test the third time too. The only good thing about that is that I can pretend it’s funny and tell people “third time’s a charm!” Coincidentally, I also hate driving. I wish I hadn’t passed at all so that I’d have an excuse not to drive.

I moved to London - haven’t driven since I passed. I dread to think how I’d be behind the wheel now. Public transport all the way! :)

Reading that, I think we have quite a lot in common - particularly 5, 7, 17, 29, 34, 35, 36. And I may be allergic to cats too cos the last two times I touched one I ended up with one eye swollen shut so I looked like cyclops and had major contact lens problems.

Sounds like an allergy to me. That’s what happened to me once. I think different cats bring out different reactions. I managed to get my contact out before my eye swelled completely shut. Thankfully.
